Frequently asked questions

This page addresses common questions about how we work, who our services are for, and how land-based rowing performance coaching can support athletes, crews, and clubs.

Please send me a message using the form below the FAQ's if your question isn't answered, or if you would like to discuss in more detail with me.

Do you work with Complete crews as well as individuals?

Yes. Supporting crews is a core part of our work. We help crews develop consistency, cohesion, and shared performance standards through structured land-based training, aligned testing, and clear performance benchmarks that translate directly to on-water outcomes. Most importantly, you follow the same training schedule as a crew - however within that every individual has their own personal training zones and numbers.

How do you support individual athletes within a crew environment?

Individual athletes receive clearly defined roles, targets, and feedback within the wider crew framework. Training is prescribed to support both personal development and collective performance, ensuring each athlete contributes effectively to the boat.

Do you also work with individual rowers?

Yes. We work with individual athletes across a wide range of standards. Individual programmes focus on technical efficiency, power development, and consistency, while remaining adaptable to club or crew training commitments.

Do you work with whole clubs?

We do. Please arrange a call to discuss in more detail. To deliver this effectively it is currently offered as exclusive to one club maximum. Pricing is dependant on the number of rowers within the club or competitive rowing squad. We are a small business therefore have the flexibility to create a structure specific to your clubs needs.

Is your coaching only land-based?

Yes. We specialise in land-based rowing performance, with a strong focus on ergometer training, strength and conditioning, and movement analysis. This allows for precise control, consistent monitoring, and highly individualised progression that transfers directly to on-water performance. We would be willing to review on water video footage taken by yourselves and provide feedback if of interest.

What does a typical programme include?

Programmes typically combine structured ergometer sessions, integrated strength and conditioning (if required), and clear performance objectives. Training is progressive, data-informed, and aligned to the athlete’s or crew’s goals, competition calendar, and training background.

How individualised is the training?

All programmes are specific to the ambitions of the individual, crew or club - then all rowers receive their individual training zones for a variety of metrics (Pace, Power, Heart Rate). Initial testing and movement assessment inform training prescription, intensity targets, and technical priorities. Progress is reviewed regularly, and plans are adjusted based on performance data and athlete feedback.

Do athletes need access to specific equipment?

Athletes will need regular access to a rowing ergometer. Strength and conditioning sessions can be adapted to suit the equipment available, whether that is a fully equipped gym or minimal home-based setup.

How is progress monitored?

Progress is tracked through performance testing, training data, and qualitative feedback. This may include erg test results, training consistency, technical markers, and strength metrics, depending on the programme.

Can your services fit around existing club training?

Yes. We regularly work alongside club programmes and coaches. Land-based plans can be integrated with existing on-water training to complement, rather than conflict with, current structures.

Do you offer short-term support or only long-term programmes?

Both options are available. Some athletes and clubs engage for focused blocks around testing, winter training, or competition preparation, while others work with us on an ongoing basis for sustained development. There is no minimum term.

How do I get started?

The first step is an initial consultation to understand more about you, your crew or club - as well as ambitions and availability for training. From there, we can recommend an appropriate level of support and outline the next steps clearly.

Are your services suitable for masters rowers?

Absolutely. Masters athletes often benefit significantly from structured, well-managed land-based training that balances performance gains and recovery.

Where are you based, and do you work remotely?

Predominantly work remotely - though where possible will do an in person visit from time to time to meet everyone. Remote coaching includes full programme delivery, data review, and regular communication through video call and messaging to ensure clarity and accountability.
